What are the licensing requirements for nail technicians?
The North Carolina Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners is in charge of issuing licenses to cosmetology and allied services. The Board has laid out the following licensure requirements for manicurists (nail technicians). The Board stipulates that applicants for nail technician license should have completed a 300 hour (minimum) training in an approved cosmetic arts school and passed the relevant examination conducted by state Board with at least 75% marks. Additionally the applicant should have completed forty hours of live model performance that should include 15 manicures, 100 applications or repair of sculptured or other artificial nails and 4 pedicures. Further the Board stipulates that these performances should have been performed only after completing sixteen hours of classroom work.
The manicurist license is valid for one year and with a view to ensuring the quality of services rendered by nail technicians, the Board had made it mandatory for nail technicians to have undergone eight hours of continuing education to be eligible for renewal of the license. Of the eight hours up to four is allowed to be completed online but the rest has to be completed by physically attending classes.
