If a person is looking to be a nail technician, it is often difficult to find a concise and consolidated list of appropriate institutions to consider attending. There are a variety of options available in the US for nail technicians, including online versus in-class courses, a number of different course lengths, and concentrations based on the artistic side or the physiological and somewhat medical side of working with nails. It is important that the potential student knows what kind of schedule they would be able to commit to, as well as what their ultimate goal in nail design is going to be. Before we look at the best institutions for the nail technician career, it is essential to examine exactly what the employment entails.

What is a Nail Technician?

A nail technician falls under the category of a cosmetology professional. This individual specializes in the cleaning, filing, and painting of a customer’s nails. Nevertheless, a nail technician performs additional services such as nail enhancements, artificial nail application, and shellac treatment as well.

In order to begin the education of a nail technician, there are a few prerequisites an individual must meet. These requirements vary from school to school so it is recommended that the particular institution is consulted to determine exceptions or additional requirements. Typically, a student must be at least 16 years of age and holding a high school diploma (or its equivalent). Every state in the United States demands that a nail technician holds a license, but they differ from state to state. Thus, it is important that a student considers where they would like to be employed in the future before choosing an institution of higher learning. Moreover, it is essential that the institution chosen has a state-approved training program. The course for a nail technician is very multi-facetted, including both written and hands-on evaluations.

When one considers the potential compensation for a nail technician, it is good to note that the US Bureau of Labor Statistics claims that the growth in salons and spas will ensure the growth in employment of nail technicians. According to the same source, the field will grow by 19% between the years 2008 and 2018. Additionally, nail technicians who are licensed in other cosmetology services earn, on average, about $10,000 more per annum.

Top Nail Technician Schools in the US

Now that the requirements and benefits of a nail technician have been outlined, an individual considering this employment has a number of institutions to choose from, each having its own unique benefit.

Marinello Schools of Beauty

Located in Los Angeles, California. Marinello Schools of Beauty was created in 1905, making it one of the oldest cosmetology schools in the United States. Since its conception, the school has opened a great number of locations in the Los Angeles area, making it accessible to the majority of the city’s population. The program at this school has a balance between classroom learning and practicing on real customers, gaining hands-on experience. Marinello Schools of Beauty is certified under the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts and Sciences (NACCAS) and thus it has all of the accreditation necessary to offer its courses. The unique thing about Marinello’s Schools is that they offer a curriculum that has a high degree of concentration on the physiological aspects of being a nail technician. Specifically, the syllabus looks at topics such as nail diseases and disorders, the anatomy of the hands and feet, and infection control. Having this background allows a nail technician to have a competitive edge over others in the same field. Additionally, Marinello Schools of Beauty offer business classes and training for the state licensing exam.

Summit Salon and Beauty School

Located in Woodland Park, Colorado. This institution is certified by a number of accrediting agencies, including NACCAS as well as the Colorado Department of Higher Education and the Private Occupational School Board. What makes this place a unique location to study is the unmatched individual care a student receives. The ratio of students to teachers at Summit Salon and Beauty School is two to one!

Guy’s Shreveport Academy of Cosmetology

Located in Shreveport, Louisiana. Similar to the other institutions, Guy’s Academy holds all the necessary certification including NACCAS and the State of Louisiana Board of Cosmetology. This school offers very in-depth programs which are sure to set a student apart from the rest. Guy’s Academy of Cosmetology has a 43 week program and each week a student is expected to complete 35 hours of in-class work. Unfortunately, this school is not a good option for part-time students, as the full time program is the only one they offer. Furthermore, a student is expected to purchase all the necessary supplies, working with their own tools the entire time they are attaining their education. If an individual is looking to be licensed in the Louisiana area, this school is a great choice because it offers thorough preparation for the state licensing exam. What’s more, this school considers transfer students for their programs, making it the place to go if an individual has previously attended a cosmetology school that was not the right fit and does not want to lose the credit they have already earned.

These are just a few of the top options for nail technician schools. A few other institutions stand above the rest and are consequently worth mentioning. The Nationwide Beauty Academy located in Columbus, Ohio offers a nail technician course that is just 10 weeks long, great for the individual who wants to get started on their career as soon as possible. Finally, Beauty Schools of America in Homestead, Florida helps a graduating student find career placement.

What school can we say is the best nail technician school in the US? It is difficult to determine because it depends on the priorities of the student. The great thing about the selection of institutions offering nail technician courses is that they vary so drastically in what they can propose to the student. Some provide short courses, others longer ones. Some concentrate on design, others on the health of nails. Some are more theoretical and concentrate on licensing, and some concentrate on experience with clients. The great thing for a potential student is that no matter what they are looking for in a nail technician school, it will be available in one of the medley of top institutions in the country.

Are online nail technician schools for real?

We keep getting enquiries from our regular visitors about online nail technician schools. This post is intended to get the facts straight on this topic. Do online nail technician schools exist? Well, the answer is yes and no. How so? Let’s find out.

Nail technician training

Almost all the states of the US need nail technicians to obtain a license for practicing in their territories. The basic qualification required by all state licensing agencies is certain hours (often ranging from 300 to 600) of training in nail technology at an approved school. The licensure examinations conducted by the states assess the candidates’ theoretical and practical knowledge in all areas of nail technology to see if they are fit to ply their trade. None of the states approve of online training in nail technology for licensing purposes. However, many of the states that have continuing education requirements for license renewal accept online training in lieu of classroom training.

We have a post “What is involved in nail technician training courses“, that gives an overall idea of the components of typical nail technician programs. In brief, such programs have an even mix of theory and practice the former involving such topics as physiology, nail anatomy, sanitation, hygiene, legal aspects, business management etc. and the latter involving application of various techniques like manicure, pedicure, polish and the like. While a firm grounding in the theory of nail technology makes one a competent professional, it is the skill of applying the techniques that determines one’s success in the profession. It is here that we realize online nail technician training is not a practical concept. There however are a few schools offering online nail technician training, but these are meant for:

a. Those who want to learn the techniques for home use.
b. Nail technicians who practise in a state which has continuing education requirements for renewal of their nail technician license.

What is taught at online nail technician schools?

As mentioned in the above section, online nail technician schools do exist, but their programs are meant for those who either want to learn the techniques for own use or are looking to fulfill their continuing education requirements for license renewal. For instance, Universal Class an online provider of vocational education, offers a training course “How to manicure”. This is a six month course equivalent to 1.1 CEU’s (Continuing Education Units) for a grade of 70% or higher. The subjects covered in the course include home manicuring and pedicuring, nail polishing, nail lotions and their application, the various tools used etc. The application of the various techniques are taught through live demonstrations by instructors. Besides Universal there are a few other online nail technician schools that offer similar training. Outside of the United States, the UK is one country where online nail technician schools are common.

Conclusion

The concept of online nail technician schools is not a realistic one as nail technology training involves as much, if not more, practical work as theory. With an online training program this is not possible. Besides, in acknowledgement of this fact, the various state licensing agencies do not accept online nail technician training in lieu of classroom training for licensure. There however exist a few online nail technician schools that teach some basic nail services primarily for the trainees’ own use. These courses are also taken by practicing nail technicians as part of fulfilling their continuing education requirements for license renewal.

Find out about nail technician schools in New Jersey.

As part of our state-wise series, we now look at New Jersey and the nail technician schools there. Those considering a career in nail technology in this prominent state of the United States, will find some useful information in this. We look at the state’s personal care services industry with special reference to nail technology and what the future holds for this occupation. We subsequently look at the licensure requirements for nail technicians in New Jersey. Finally, we look at all the nail technician schools in New Jersey.

Introduction

The state of New Jersey, lying between the expansive metropolitan areas of New York and Philadelphia. The 2010 census put New Jersey’s total population at 8,791,894 making it the eleventh most populous state in the United States. And this translated to a population density of 1,185/sq mile, making it the most densely populated state in the country. Whites made up 68.6% of the population, African Americans 13.7%, Asians 8.3% and others the rest. Though Newark is the fourth poorest city in the US, the state as a whole has the second highest median household income in the country courtesy that much of New Jersey comprises affluent suburbs of New York City and Philadelphia.

The city’s general affluence, proximity to New York, one of the fashion centers of the world and its cultural diversity make for a good market for personal care services. As an indication, the city had 17,450 hairdressers/hairstylists/cosmetologists, 4240 nail technicians, 1,430 shampooers and 480 skincare specialists according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics report of May 2010. The market for personal care services in the state is expected to grow at a rate higher than the national average in the medium term. A career as nail technician in New Jersey, therefore has the potential to be a rewarding one.

Nail technician license in New Jersey

For practising as a nail technician, a manicurist license is required from the Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling in the first instance. As per the licensing requirements set out by the Board you must:

Be at least 17 years of age.

Have a minimum education of high school or equivalent.

Provide proof of successful completion of 300 hours of instruction in nail technology at one of the licensed nail technician schools in New Jersey.

In this article we look at nail techncian schools in Nashville, Tennessee. Following our regular pattern, we first look at the personal care services industry of the city and its growth potential. We then discuss how to earn a nail technician trade license in Tennessee. In the last section, we discuss nail technician schools in Nashville.

Introduction

Nashville, the capital city of the state of Tennessee, is recognized as the home of country music and a leading center of the music industry, earning it the nickname “Music City”. It is also well-known for its publishing, transportation and healthcare industries. Besides, it is home to a large number of colleges and universities, which has earned it the nickname “Music City”. The consolidated city-county (Nashville-Davidson) population was 626,681 as of Census 2010, making it the second largest city in Tennessee after Memphis. Whites make up almost 66% of this, African-Americans 27% and Hispanics-Latinos 7.5%. The city’s culture has largely been centered on its large university community and country music.

For its population and size of the economy, Nashville’s personal care industry is of rather modest size. According to the Occupational Employment Statistics for 2010 published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Nashville-Davidson–Murfreesboro–Franklin metropolitan area employed 1900 hairdressers & cosmetologists, 80 shampooers and 80 skincare specialists and just 8 nail technicians. Admittedly, the above numbers include only employed workers and there may be many who operate on their own but even if we double these numbers to factor in the self-employed category, the numbers still remain low.

It is, however, reckoned that these low numbers are an opportunity for those aspiring to make a career in the personal care services industry. The general view is that there are not enough personal care workers available to keep up with the rising demand. With personal incomes rising and people becoming more conscious of their appearance, demand for the services of beauty workers such as nail technicians is bound to increase. Those aspiring for a career in the personal care services industry in Nashville can certainly consider nail technology as an option and if they want, get trained in one the nail technician schools here.

Nail technician license

Nail technicians have to earn a license a by sitting for an examination conducted by the Tennessee State Board of Cosmetology. The applicants should be at least sixteen years of age and have completed 600 hours of training in one of the licensed nail techncian schools in Tennessee. Reciprocity arrangements do exist with many states which makes it possible for those holding valid licenses from them earn a nail technician license in Tennessee without having to appear for the examination. The nail technician license is issued for a period of two years, after which it has to be renewed. For further details, contact:

Nail technician schools in Nashville, Tennessee

A 600-hour training in an approved nail technician school is a pre-requisite for applying for a nail technician license. Aspiring nail technicians in Nashville should ensure that the school they join has a valid license from the State Cosmetology Board or an accreditation from an agency that the Board approves. It is always advisable to check with the Board to confirm the status of the school and its program before committing to it.

The following are the approved nail technician schools in Nashville as of writing this note.
We initially place the state’s personal care services in perspective, look at the potential for nail technician as a career in the state, find out the licensure requirements for nail technicians and finally the nail technician schools in Michigan.

Introduction

The state of Michigan forms part of the Great Lakes region of the United States. It had a population of 9,883,640 as per the US Census 2010, that retained its position as the eighth most populous state in the country. Whites form 78.9% of the population, African Americans 14.2%, Asians 2.4% and American Indians 0.6%. The state’s economy is largely supported by its automobiles, food products, information technology, aeronautics, military equipment, copper, iron, and furniture. The recession that began at the start of the 2000′s and further exacerbated by the September 11, 2001 attacks saw the state’s economy facing difficulties. It is yet to completely recover from this situation and a May 2011 Bureau of Labor Statistics report put the unemployment rate of Michigan at a rather high 10.3%. Not unexpectedly, the state’s personal care services industry too had been hit by these factors. Things are, however, looking up for the state’s economy and the beauty industry too is looking to better days ahead.

As per the May 2010 State Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates report Michigan had 780 nail technicians and 12,090 barbers/hairdressers/cosmetologists (self-employed practitioners excluded). Let’s now take a look at the trend in the number of employed nail technicians in the state over the last few years.

Trend in employed nail techs - Michigan

The figures do not show a clear growth trend. While the number of employed nail techs is seen to have doubled during the eleven year period up to 2010, this is still not high growth.

How to become a nail technician in Michigan?

The Michigan State Board of Cosmetology under the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, Bureau of Commercial Services is vested with issuing licenses to nail technicians in the state. An applicant to a nail technician license should be at least seventeen years of age, have a minimum education of ninth grade or equivalent and have completed a 400 hour nail technician training in one of the accredited nail technician schools in Michigan. Please visit the Department’s website for further license related information.

Nail technician schools in Michigan

The trend in figures of nail technicians indicated a rather low growth in absolute numbers of nail technicians in the state. Training facilities for nail technicians are also limited in the state. Listed below are the major nail technician schools in Michigan.

London, the capital city of the United Kingdom is among the most fashionable cities of the world. The Global Language Monitor ranked it the third (behind Milan and New York) among the fashion capitals of the world in 2010. It is therefore natural to expect the residents of London to be conscious about fashion and appearance. London’s beauty services industry is internationally renowned and influences the fashion and beauty trends of the rest of the world. The city has several internationally known salons and spas that cater to a clientele comprising the elite of the world. Manicuring (nail technician) services are highly sought after and becoming increasingly in demand.

How to become a nail technician in London?

There are several training schools available for aspiring nail technicians in London. Together they present a wide and disparate array of options to prospective students, variously equipping them to offer basic nail care services to the most advanced services such as nail art and artificial nail. One can also train under a practising nail technician and pick up knowledge of the various techniques and procedures. However, enrolling for an appropriate training programme is a better idea because it gives a sound theoretical foundation in the subject to the student.

The pastoral state of Kentucky (KY) is primarily known for its thoroughbred horses and race courses. It had a population of 4,339,367 as of the US Census 2010. From its agrarian roots, the state’s economy has now diversified into auto manufacturing, fuel production and medical services. The beauty industry in the state is not a major economic sector yet. As for nail technology, limited training opportunities are available. This article outlines the licensure requirements for nail technicians and lists the major nail technician schools in KY.

Nail technician license in KY

The Kentucky State Board of Hairdressers and Cosmetologists is the agency in charge of issuing license to all workers offering beauty services in the state. To apply for a nail technician license in Kentucky, the applicant has to be at least 16 years of age and should have completed two years of high school or its equivalent. They should also have completed a training program in nail technology of at least 600 hours from an approved nail technician school in KY. The licensing examination assesses the candidates’ theoretical and practical knowledge. Reciprocity arrangements do exist with several states that have similar requirements for nail technicians. The license is issued for one year and for renewal the applicant has to undergo continuing education training of at least six hours. More details can be had from:

Nail technician schools in KY

There exist a few schools that offer nail technician training in the state. Sources within the industry are of the view that training avenues will improve soon in line with the growth of the beauty services industry. Be that as it may, currently these are the schools offering nail technician programs in the state.

1.Empire Beauty School
5120 Dixie Highway
Louisville, KY 40216

2.Empire Beauty School
554 Westport Road
Elizabethtown, KY 42701

3.Lindsey Institute of Cosmetology
1059 Shive Lane
Bowling Green, KY 42103

4.Prestige Academy of Cosmetology
2818 Alexanderia Pike
Heighland Heights, KY 41076

There are some minor schools offering nail technician programs but these are not approved by the Board and hence, not listed here. You should evaluate these schools for their quality of training, program costs, placement support etc. Remember it is your time, money and above all your future at stake. So invest enough time in finding the right school and you will not be disappointed.
